The Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable Economy

The Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable EconomyThe Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable EconomyWomen make less money than men. Most people already know without even looking at statistics that women earn less money than men, and that women have fewer employment and advancement opportunities (despite the fact mora women hold higher degrees than men), but here are some other areas where women are disadvantaged that you might now know about 8 in 10 single-parent families are headed by women.Women are more likely to be unemployed during a recession than are men.Women are more likely to be laid off when companies downsize.More women than men work low-wage, part-time jobs.Fewer women than men meet the eligibility qualifications for unemployment benefits (because they earn lower wages and often are only given part-time hours).During a recession, mens median salaries are stagnant but womens salaries have already dropped 3%.For every dollar a man earns working full-time, female wo rkers only earn 77 cents for the same jobs. Women are also less likely to be eligible for employee benefits and employment-based retirement plans such as a 401(k).According to a Harvard study, the median net worth of unmarried women was $12,900, compared to $26,850 for men. The study cited the wage eu-agrarpolitik as the primary cause of this inequity.Lower wages and higher expenses mean women also have fewer savings and assets than men. Womens Expenses Exceed Those of Men Men and woman pay the same high prices for food, gas, but women often bear expenses than men, with higher incomes, do not. With 8 in 10 single parent families being headed by women, it is women who have to balance the dual roles of work and parenting - not men. When dead-beat dads fail to pay child support, many women have to pick up the tab by taking on additional, low-wage jobs to try and make ends meet. Nearly every state in the U.S. has now cut funding and programs (also reduced at the federal level) that once helped women enforce their child support awards, trained them to re-enter the workforce, and Congress has even severely cut funding to womens business development centers beginning in 2009. Because of loopholes, changes in child support laws, and fewer affordable legal resources for women, an increasing number of men are defaulting on child support. This means more women are now paying all, or disproportionate amounts, to provide for the needs of their children. Women often pay higher insurance premiums and more out-of-pocket health care costs than men, who do not have to pay for birth control or maternity benefits, and because more women pay for health insurance for their children than do men. Womens credit scores are generally equal to or better than mens, but with lower incomes and smaller assets, to purchase a home women need to go with a subprime mortgage 30% to 40% more often than men, which means a lower down payment, but higher monthly payments. According to Erin Parris h in the Minnesota Press Women often fall victim to risky lending practices, not only because they are more likely to lack financial literacy skills, but also because they are offered subprime mortgages at a higher rate than men. Insecure lending programs are often what push women over the edge, forcing them to choose between feeding their families or paying off debt. SourceErin Parrish. Minnesota Womens Press. Boost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness Program

Boost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness ProgramBoost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness ProgramWhen you think about it, the concept of workplace wohlbefinden goes back at least as far as Henry Ford, whose automobile company started five-day, 40-hour workweeks in 1926. Over the decades to follow, companies set policies for breaks and vacations, banned smoking in offices and formed after-work sports leagues.Today, the skys the limit, with on-site fitness boot camps, take-your-dog-to-work days and rooftop yoga sessions.Efforts to promote health and well-being have been shown to increase productivity and help minimize healthcare costs. But they can also do something else give your company an edge when it comes to hiring the best employees before the competition does. Seventy-three percent of workers responding to a new OfficeTeam survey said a companys wellness program influences their decision of whether to work there or not. Given todays tight hiring market, its not surprising t hat workplace wellness is getting more attention in 2019.How can companies, large and small, ensure their corporate health and wellness offerings are attractive to potential hires? Here are six suggestions to get you started.1. Wellness incentivesOffering prizes to employees who engage in healthy behavior, such as weight loss or smoking cessation, can go a long way. Encourage employees to start a lunchtime walking group or consider working with an outside vendor to put a formal program in place, such as lunchtime CrossFit or Weight Watchers.2. Access to fitness facilitiesYour company might have a lunch room, but do you have movement zones, rock-climbing walls and nap rooms? Probably not, but dont worry These are pretty unusual. Consider free or discounted gym memberships, chair massages or exercise classes for your workplace wellness initiatives.3. Ergonomic evaluations and equipmentProper ergonomics is essential in offices and are part of workplace wellness. Can chairs be adjusted for each employees height? Are computer monitors the right height, and are foot rests needed at desks? Standing desks are gaining in popularity, if youre considering cubicle makeovers for your office.4. Healthy food optionsWhat you offer in your break rooms and vending machines says a lot about your workplace wellness. Doughnuts or carrots? Soft drinks or filtered water? You may not want to regulate what your workers eat and drink, but you can encourage good nutrition by offering healthy food choices at company meetings and in office cafeterias.5. On-site vaccinations or health screeningsOn-site flu shot clinics hosted by companies for their workers offer a convenient way to make sure everyone has the opportunity to be vaccinated. Its likely these events will cut back on sick days, too. Companies also can create a culture of wellness with health screenings that might identify risks involving smoking, weight physical activity, blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure and diet.6. Stre ss management resourcesWork-related stress can take a heavy toll on individuals and companies. Some of the techniques to minimize stress you can share with your team include the followingGetting enough restStarting the day with a clear deskKeeping a daily to-do list to prioritize tasksPracticing time managementEating nutritious mealsDeveloping a good support systemEngaging in hobbies you enjoyCommunicating with your supervisor for assistanceOther resources? Music, massages, meditation and walks can do wonders.Just as job seekers are lured by competitive compensation, benefits packages and work-life balance, they are attracted by workplace wellness, too. If you make wellness part of your corporate culture, you may find a bonbon for yourself, too, when its time to hire.

Heres how you can turn your small talk on a plane into a new career

Heres how you can turn your small talk on a plane into a new careerHeres how you can turn your small talk on a plane into a new careerHunkering down for a long flight, I adjusted my seat and flashed half-hearted smiles at the strangers awkwardly shuffling into the seats next to me. I wouldve never guessed that a few hours later, one of those strangers would be my future anfhrer.I welches on vacation, catching one of those convenient and affordable intercontinental European flights to my next holiday destination - career opportunities werent necessarily the first thing on my mind. But as luck would have it, I sat next to a chatty business professional on his way home from a meeting in London. The 2-hour plane conversation that changed my lifeAfter exchanging pleasantries and discussing what each of us welches doing on a plane headed from London to Austria, we naturally fell into a conversation about the e-commerce industry the businessman welches a part of. As a fresh graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, I was delighted to have the opportunity to ask an expert about the booming industry. Although my knowledge was limited, I rattled off questions about the company he worked for, as well as industry logistics, legislation, and future projections for the global market.Pleased to discuss his line of work, the businessman enthusiastically dove into a description of the current state of the industry and provided in-depth answers to all of my questions. After entertaining my friendly interrogation and asking me about my credentials, the businessman revealed he was actually the Managing Director of the company Id been quizzing him about. Before parting ways, he handed me a business card, said he liked my enthusiasm, and asked me if Id ever considered relocating. The critical follow-upAfter platzsettling into my hostel in Austria, I immediately grabbed my laptop and sent an email thanking the businessman for our interesting conversation. Although I still had a week left of my carefree European vacation, I knew that a prompt, standout follow-up communication was critical if I wanted to further explore this opportunity. I informed him of when I was returning to Canada, and suggested we set up a Skype conversation to reconnect shortly after.A few days later, while watching the Austrian Alps blur past the window of the train I was on, I received a reply from the businessman with a list of times that he was available for a Skype meeting. At that moment, for the first time, relocating my life to London started to feel like a tangible opportunity.Determined not to further rely on luck or happenstance, I devoted the rest of my travel time (what else was I going to do on my 9-hour plane ride home anyway?) to further researching the e-commerce industry and the businessman from the planes company.Surprise I actually did itFour months later, I relocated from my quaint hometown, Victoria, Canada, to the bustling European metropolis, London, for an ambiti ous (and at the time, terrifying) career opportunity with the stranger from the plane. Id never lived in a big city (let alone on another continent), had very few personal contacts in London, and had no clue how or where to find an apartment - but for some reason, I found myself throwing my cutest rain gear into my suitcase without hesitation. After stepping off of the plane in London, I was immediately overcome with apprehension and self-doubt. The cautionary warnings Id received from anxious friends and family before leaving Canada played on repeat in my mind. Id done some impulsive things in my life, but this was crazy- even for me. I took a deep breath, pushed the voices to the back of my mind, and stopped my shaking fingers from calling my best friend in a panic. But how did I end up here?Once I was a bit more settled into my new career, Id often find myself staring out of my office window at the enchanting city Id grown to call home - perplexed at how this new life of mine had come to be.Having recounted the story of why I moved to London countless times, the ludicrousness of my decision to accept the man on the planes offer had somewhat lost its luster to me - until a drink with a particularly inquisitive co-worker. I was sharing an after-work pint with a new coworker when she asked me a question that no one else had asked, How did you manage to get a job offer on a two-hour plane ride? How could I do that?I realized that Id never explored this question with my boss, nor had I taken much time to seriously consider it for myself. So I decided to schedule a meeting with him.The importance of understanding your strengthsDelighted to discuss the topic, my boss tangentially articulated the importance of understanding your personal strengths. He attributed his own successful career progression to the ability to select roles that promoted his strengths and curtailed his weaknesses.Next, he suggested I take The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), ponder the qu estion myself, and schedule a meeting to review my findings. After ruminating on my personality traits, completing the MBTI, and reviewing my bosss cliff notes, I finally had an answer to my co-workers question. My interpersonal skills, open-mindedness, and self-confidence were the strengths that lead me to this job.Honing my personal strengthsMy boss cited my robust interpersonal skills as the fundamental reason he offered me a job. Id often been congratulated on my strong interpersonal skills, but I couldnt comprehend the rarity or correlation to success in a workplace.Interpersonal skills are basically your ability to interact with other humans - reflected through both verbal and nonverbal communication. Ive always found it easy to form genuine human connections, and didnt think much about starting a conversation with a stranger on a plane. My boss said hed been caught off guard by my natural networking skills, palpable enthusiasm, and ability to quickly form an honest connectio n with a stranger. As a frequent flyer, he assured me that my interpersonal skills set me apart from the rest of the people on the plane. My decision to move to London to pursue a precarious job offer from a man on a plane was met with both doubt and apprehension by many people in my life. Naturally, I experienced my own dose of trepidation alongside this, but I chose open-mindedness instead of fear. Risks are okay. Mistakes are okay.As a fresh university graduate, moving to London to begin my career in an unknown position and industry required a great deal of self-confidence. I used to think the nerves and apprehension I experienced regarding my move meant that I didnt have a strong sense of self-confidence. Now, I understand that choosing to move despite my internal self-doubt demonstrates true confidence and self-efficacy.Getting on the plane was the equivalent of investing in my own stock - I believed that I had the ability to influence my own life and handle anything that Londo n might throw at me.This article first appeared on Career Contessa.

12 Tips for Sending Modeling Photos to Agencies

12 Tips for Sending Modeling Photos to Agencies12 Tips for Sending Modeling Photos to AgenciesBecause most aspiring models dont live in major modeling markets like New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Milan or Tokyo where they can attend a go-see or open call, they need to submit their photos by mail, email, or through an online model scouting company. Whether youre a new model just starting out, or even a model with experience who is looking to expand your representation to bigger markets, these twelve tips will help you get your photos right the first time and improve your chances of getting signed to an agency and getting booked for modeling jobs. 01Simple Snapshots Are BestIf youre just starting out as a model, then simple snapshots are just fine. Agencies do leid expect you to have professional photos from a well-developed portfolio. In fact, it can actually be better if you do not have professional photos because they want to see the real you.Good agents and scouts will look at you as a blank segeltuchschuh and think about how they can mold your look into something that they, and their clients, are looking for. If you submit professional photos or ones where youre more or less posing as a character, then you risk pigeonholing yourself into a particular look.02Keep Makeup to a MinimumAgents and scouts want to see the real you, so it is important to keep makeup to a minimum. Think of your face as a template.A little foundation, concealer, blush, mascara and lip gloss is all you need. Male modelsgenerally should not wear makeup, but a small amount of bronzer is alright as long as its not noticeable. If your facetends to get oily, then its okay towear some translucent powderto get rid of any sheen.03Keep Clothing Simple and In Good TasteA simple pair of well-fitting jeans and a t-shirt are just fine for your photos.Agents and scouts are looking at you and your body proportions, not the clothing youre wearing. Never dress up in evening or black-tie attire, pro m dresses, or wedding attire. Never dress in clothing that would be considered too sexual or provocative, including extremely low-cut shirts and jeans that sit very low on the hip.04Include One Headshot and One Body ShotThe very minimum you should submit is one headshot and one body shot. The rule of thumb is to pick your best photos that highlight your best features. Preferably, include some shots of you smiling and some shots of you in a neutral mood.Be sure to include the left and right side of yourface, because everyone has a good side that photographs better. Also, you must send body profiles where youre not obscuredby surrounding objects, even furnitureor landscaping such as trees or boulders.05Keep Hairstyles SimpleAgents and scouts want to see the length and condition of your hair, so its important to keep your hairstyle simple and well-groomed.Make sure your hair is in good condition. If you need a haircut, color job, or trim, go to your hairstylist and colorist before you take your photos. If you have long hair then take photos of your hair down and pulled back.06Include a Swimsuit ShotIf youre comfortable wearing a swimsuit then its always a good idea to include some shots of you wearing either a one-piece or bikini. Keep posing to a minimum when wearing a swimsuit because your shots can quickly go from elegant to tacky with some unfortunate poses.07Never Submit Nude (or Suggestive) PhotosIn a nutshell, agents and scouts do not want to see you naked, ever. Even photos that suggest nudity are off the table. If you have a fabulous photograph of yourself but there is so much midriff (and lower)showing, do not send that photo.08Only You in the PhotosBe sure youre the only person in the photos you submit. Agents and scouts want to see you and only you. You need to be a clean slate that they can dress and portray to tell a story and sell a productor service. You dont want yourphotos to tell a story. Never submit photos of you and your friends drinking at th e bar, playing pool, or partying in Las Vegas. Save those pics for your socialmedia platforms.09Do Not Wear FurPlease do not wear fur of any kind, anywhere, in your photos. And that includes fake fur, which may be hard to distinguish from the real thing. Many agents find the use of fur in the fashion industry offensive. Besides, there is nothing about a fur coat that says young and fresh, which is the look that agents want in new models. Even mature models need to look youthful and fresh for their age category.10No Fancy Clothing or Makeup on ChildrenFashion and commercial agencies in big markets like New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Milan, and Tokyo want to see real kids. They dont want Barbie dolls and photos from beauty pageants. To ensure that kid shots look real, make sure the head shots show clean faces void of makeup, without frilly dresses or suits with bow ties, and without hairpieces. Also, food covered faces are cute for grandparents but never for agents. You can use yoursmartp hone to get a shot of your child at the local playground or a backyard barbeque. As a matter of fact, you probably already have a model-worthy photo in your smartphone.11Include All of Your Contact InformationThere have been many times that Ive been interested in a model and had no way to contact them because they forgot to include their contact information. If youre mailing your photos, be sure to include your full name, the city you live in, your email address, and day and evening phone numbers on the back of each and every photo. Photos can get separated from the envelopes they came in, so just attaching a note to your photos is not enough. To save time and ensure scouts have all of your information, print up some stickers at home with your contact information and apply one to each photo. There are many online stationery stores where you can have inexpensive stickers made if you dont feel comfortable making them yourself. Just dont get too fancy with your stickers- the idea is to b e visible to scouts. Stick to a white background and an easy-to-read black font.12Include Your StatsYour statistics are your key measurements and data. Women should always include their age, height, bust, waist, and hip measurements. Men should include their age, height, chest and waist size, jacket size, and pant length. Alsonote any distinguishingfeatures, such as freckles, moles,or visible tattoos.First Impressions Are ImportantIn the modeling industry, your photos are everything, and first impressions are equally as important.Modeling agencies receive thousands of photos every week and agents will make their decision whether or not to represent you within a matter of seconds. Therefore, its important to always look your best (and appropriate) even in simple snapshots. You also must include all the statistical information agents need in bestellung to represent you. Dont get passed over simply because you forgot to include your contact information and they had no way to reach you.

Bad Reasons to Quit Your Job

Bad Reasons to Quit Your JobBad Reasons to Quit Your JobAnyone whos changed jobs before knows that one special moment when they knew it was time to go. Maybe a babo said something inappropriate, or maybe you were passed up for that promotion yet again after years of waiting. Weve spent a lot of time thinking about the right reasons to leave a job a vertical move, a better salary, a new location. But sometimes silly things pop up that have us frustrated, worked-up and ready to leave our job. Here are four situations to protect yourself from so that you never leave a job for the wrong reasons The new hire is super annoyingA bad new hire can disrupt the energy of even the most efficient team. But an inexperienced or loud-mouthed teammate so annoying hes worthy of a Dilbert comic is no reason to head for the door. If its a new boss, this is your opportunity to manage up. If its a new teammate, its an opportunity to learn patience and appreciate diversity. A co-worker saboteur or toxic bo ss might be cause enough to leave your job, but dont leave a good opportunity just because of an annoying new hire your next job may have one, too. The sekretariat kitchen smells (and the AC is broken again, and the chairs are awful)Smelly, uncomfortable, dirty, inconvenient whatever describes your office kitchen (or your chair or your conference room) is unfortunate, but elend a reason to say goodbye to a steady paycheck. With enough politeness and persistence, an uncomfortable or inefficient working environment can be adjusted over time. Before you dismiss your employer as poorly managing your physical environment, bring up your concerns with your manager and see what you can do to enact change. Of course, if any of your concerns are cause for a health crisis (such as toxic mold from a damp kitchen or chronic back pain from second-hand chairs), it needs to be addressed immediately so that management can come up with a company-wide solution. Leave for health concerns, but not for day-to-day unpleasantness. The boss sided with someone else on an important decisionYou made an excellent point, youve been with the company longer than the other person and your boss still sided with someone else on an important decision. Before you flip out and question why youve been so loyal over the years, take a minute and think it through. As with everything else in life, we often dont know what goes on behind the scenes of a workplace decision and managers often cant reveal all the details. Dont focus on the issue at hand focus on your boss. Do you trust them to have taken your thoughts into consideration, or do you not? If you do, extend your boss some loyalty and hope you find out the details someday. If you dont, thats not such a petty reason to leave a job.You think you deserve more moneyThis is a tricky reason, of course, because compensation is often a valid point of contention. But heres something to consider before you quit without bringing the problem to your HR ma nager theres never extra money in the budget for raises. As we learned in a past article, raises take a long time to review, process and defend. And if you arent actively participating in the process, its unlikely to happen for you. Before you get worked up about how much more your skills are worth, put together a business case for your raise. Research the industry voreingestellt for your position, make a list of your achievements and the ways in which youve added value and present them candidly to your boss.Thousands of small details go into figuring out whether a job is worth keeping or leaving. Dont let petty annoyances prevent you from getting the most out of your current job.
