How to Tell If Now Is a Good Time to Ask for a Raise

How to Tell If Now Is a Good Time to Ask for a Raise This is the second in a series of six posts on salary negotiation published in partnership with PayScale.com. As with so many things in lifeâ€"relationships, comedy, investing in the stock marketâ€"getting a raise can depend on good timing. If you’ve done your salary research, know what you’re worth in the job market and have determined a pay increase is warranted, you’re far more likely to get it if you think strategically about when to have the raise conversation with your boss. Here are just a few things to think about before you mark a date on your calendar: Synching Up with Your Company’s Performance Review Schedule If your company has a regular performance review schedule, try to have a conversation about your compensation a couple months in advance so that your boss has time to make a case and advocate for budget ahead of that process. If you wait until the performance review process is underway, often the decisions about salary increases have already been made by the management team. It doesn’t mean that an exception won’t be made, but the easier you make it for your manager, the smoother the whole negotiation process will go. Taking the Internal Temperature at Your Company Even if the data shows that you’re making less than you should be, that might not be enough to convince your employer to increase your pay if the company at large isn’t faring well. The best time to ask for a raise is when revenue is on the rise, after a major financial win (especially one you helped with) or when the company is generally in a strong position. http://www.payscale.com/js/psextension-min.js?1 http://www.payscale.com/syndication/start_large_v3r.aspx?instance=1js=1v=1af=job=city=state=country=United%20Statestextcolor=333333backgroundcolor=a5d34c Accurate, real-time salaries for thousands of careers. If you’ve just had a round of layoffs, a raise conversation is unlikely to go in your favor. If you believe in the company, you may want to stick it out. But, if the death bell is tolling for your employer, looking elsewhere might be the best bet for improving your own financial wellbeing. Staying on Top of Industry Trends Taking a broader look at your industry and understanding the external forces that may be impacting it may help with timing your raise discussion, and will also help you make good, strategic decisions about your career overall. When the Internet started becoming more of a content destination, those journalists who saw the writing on the wall and made the move from print to online early on are certainly patting themselves on the back. It pays to understand if you’re in a thriving or dying industry and whether the lean times are temporary (e.g. real estate) or lasting. If you deserve a raise, you should ask for one, but good timing can mean the difference between a small bump and a significant jump. 5 Tips For Effective Phone Networking - Work It Daily

5 Tips For Effective Phone Networking - Work It Daily 5 Tips For Effective Phone Networking Before my resume writing and coaching business, I ran an executive recruiting firm. This is where I learned all my best phone networking and cold calling secrets. I had to make hundreds of phone calls year after year. I learned what worked and what didn’t when “phone networking.” Related: The Jimmy Fallon Effect: 10 Qualities Of Great Networkers Now, I share what I learned with job seekers to help them approach job search related phone calls with ease, professionalism, and excitement. There's a trick to it â€" but it’s not hard to learn â€" even for shy and introverted types (like myself). 5 Tips For Effective Phone Networking Here are five tips that can help you have meaningful phone conversations if you are cold-calling during your job search: 1. Speak In Terms Of Results If you're approaching a key decision maker in a company “cold,” you must learn to speak his or her language and understand the only reason anyone is going to want to talk to you is because you can make or save them money. Thus, you have to first understand and translate how your skills equal $$ and %% if you're calling a key decision maker. Human resources does not speak this language; they are more oriented to matching skills and tasks. Think your work can't be quantified? Think again. For most careers positions, no one would hire us if it couldn’t. 2. Front Load Your Introduction So, the normal cadence of the back-and-forth, “may I say who is calling please” and so on, is broken. Say: “Hi, this is Mary Elizabeth Bradford, President of Career Artisan calling for John Smith in regards to our correspondence please.” Stay in control. 3. Overcome Objections If your key contact says you need to talk to HR, say, “I respect what you're saying, but HR is usually not interested in talking about how I might save or make you money; rather, they are focused on how my hard and soft qualifications match your open positions. I would like to focus on how I might actually affect your bottom line. Would you be open to taking a meeting with me to explore that?” 4. Begin With A Compliment When calling someone for the first time, the single best thing you can do to ensure a good outcome is begin with a genuine compliment about them or their company. It shows you are focused and purposeful, you are putting the focus on THEM not YOU (always a smart move), setting a positive tone, and setting the person and/or company up as “the guide/mentor/expert.” Flattering. 5. Learn How To Leave A Message When leaving a message, be sure not to be too brief or too long winded. Try something like “Hi John, this is Mary Elizabeth Bradford. It’s 9 am on Tuesday and I'm calling, as promised, to follow up on the correspondence I sent you last week. I will be in the office all day today and my number is 408-555-1212. Thank you and I'm really looking forward to talking with you.” I feel that referencing how great your accomplishments are or how you can help them in a voice message is premature, and that your better bet is making a good first impression with a positive, professional, and friendly voice mail. You want to sound intriguing - like someone you would enjoy talking to (and maybe even interviewing and hiring!). BONUS TIP: Stand up and smile when you are talking on the phone â€" people can hear it and your energy level with naturally rise. Want to learn more about phone networking? How to Handle the Most Difficult Parts of Leadership

How to Handle the Most Difficult Pspeciess of Leadership Perhaps the founder and CEO of The Lonely Entrepreneur Michael Dermer says it best when he says true leadership is more of an art than a science. And oftentimes, great motivators and exceptional change-makers are created through trial and error, and a consistent, constant dedication to improve. While everyone wants to add manager or director to their LinkedIn profile, many underestimate the additional job responsibilities that come with the gig. From conflict-management to keeping everyone on your gruppe on track, there are some tall orders and difficult situations a true leader has to mitigate. Dermer explains the art of leadership is at the crux of an organization and is what makes positive results and outcomes possible. Though it seems simple its far from it.If it were, there would be only one book available at Amazon called How to Be a CEO. What makes it so hard is that you have to balance multiple moving parts, he explains .What are these facets? To name a few, these below. With practice, patience and diligence you can handle anything thrown your way. Luckily, experts help you get started with the most difficult areas of managementMaking sense of chaosMuch like a parent, often management is brought in to deal with an issue, a crisis or one big ol mess, according to career coach Judy Panagakos. Perhaps two employees arent seeing eye-to-eye, or a client is causing internal debates that arent necessary. Even though a leader didnt create the herausforderung (and likely didnt have anything to do with it), Panagakos shares they must solve it in a respectful, efficient way. When youre presented with this type of situation, she suggests gathering any and all information you can from everyone involved. Then, compare it to past instances that may have happened to determine the cause, effect, and in some cases, to decide if this is reoccurring or elend. If so, she says you could consider reframing the team into n ew roles to remedy the issue. This might be done by rearranging workflow or renaming the roles they play to position them as champions for the change needed. Same team, but getting a fresh start off the teams baseline she adds.Address gapsand problematic employeesNo one wants to be criticized, and no one should be in an unproductive way. However, part of the leadership role is to give feedback and make adjustments when necessary. As Panagakos explains, all leaders will have someone or even a few people who are not measuring up to the rest of the teams capability.Though it isnt easy to admit you have gaps, it is essential that you address them, fairly and objectively to ensure the continued success of the company. This could mean letting a bad egg go or hiring on help to mentor younger staff members. These sorts of problems do not resolve easily nor quickly, but your efforts will platzset the stage out of line behavior is noticed, not tolerated, and has consequences. Your team is mor e important than delaying action for the individual with the problem, she reminds.Driving performance beyond visionDermer shares for many leaders, vision is easy. And while rahmen a vision or a goal is an instrumental part of their role, its only the first step.Getting an organization or a group of people to turn that vision into a plan is a daunting task on its own, he explains. Process is what enables you to put ideas into action.Maybe youre launching a new product from your line, presenting a new service for your wheelhouse or pivoting direction. You need to get everyone on your team excited, on the same page and well, working hard.To bring this excitement to bear, create a process that brings the product to life. Give the project a name. Create a formal team. Set a weekly meeting. Establish standard reports, Dermer encourages. Process sounds dull but it is the enabler of great vision.Staying consistentEven though the workplace is an ever-changing, always-evolving concept, there something to be said about consistency and how it enables trust within companies. Not only peer-to-peer but between managers and employees, too. No matter what leadership style you practice, Dermer says providing weekly summaries and keeping dependable meeting schedules will build morale and help everyone stay tracked for success.Once per week put out a one-page bulleted summary of the week. This could be about the company as a whole or about your specific piece. Resist the temptation to clutter those around you with constant communications. One page, once per week, he recommends. As for meetings? Those are up to you to set and to keep depending on the culture of your company and how large or small your team is. It is empowering to others to know that every Tuesday at 10 a.m. you are going to talk about the marketing plan as opposed to 32 times throughout the week, he adds.Giving feedback that makes a differenceOr rather, leaving your mark on outcomes, as Panagakos puts it. Taking an editors and a strategic eye to every project and timeline means extra steps on your part, but it will help the team progress.Leaders should review the output of the team and take time to endorse the efforts of the group, giving immediate praise to the quality work, giving immediate and clear edits to things that need to be changed, and adding their individual contribution of material if they believe it will improve the finished product, she explains. When leaders dont do this, many employees feel as if they are left without guidance, lack direction and overall, feel as if they arent steady within their job. This can lead to high turnover or staff who dread coming into the office.Remaining empatheticWhen youre super-stoked about an employee and you believe they are going to go above and beyond and then they fall short it is normal to be frustrated. Or, when a next-in-charge you can usually depend on seems off, you suddenly have to pick up the slack. Its easy to let your temper or ich get the best of you, but Dermer says the most impactful leaders know how to take that pause and consider the individual. The reality is that you have to learn how to press a different button each time depending on the person and the situation at hand. Learning how to do that can take a lifetime but here is one thing to try, he explains. Walk a few minutes in their shoes and your emotional intelligence can grow by leaps and bounds. This doesnt mean you have to become a softie, but rather, that you approach leadership with empathy.Leaders cannot show doubt. But at the same time, leaders need to be able to show the people around them that they are always improving. This is an incredibly difficult balance to strike. In striking that balance, never waver in your belief of the greater vision or goal, he explains. Embrace the desire to learn and improve and share that with your team while you let them know that whatever it takes, the team will achieve. Lindsay TigarThis story originally appeared on Ladders.

The Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable Economy

The Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable EconomyThe Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable EconomyWomen make less money than men. Most people already know without even looking at statistics that women earn less money than men, and that women have fewer employment and advancement opportunities (despite the fact mora women hold higher degrees than men), but here are some other areas where women are disadvantaged that you might now know about 8 in 10 single-parent families are headed by women.Women are more likely to be unemployed during a recession than are men.Women are more likely to be laid off when companies downsize.More women than men work low-wage, part-time jobs.Fewer women than men meet the eligibility qualifications for unemployment benefits (because they earn lower wages and often are only given part-time hours).During a recession, mens median salaries are stagnant but womens salaries have already dropped 3%.For every dollar a man earns working full-time, female wo rkers only earn 77 cents for the same jobs. Women are also less likely to be eligible for employee benefits and employment-based retirement plans such as a 401(k).According to a Harvard study, the median net worth of unmarried women was $12,900, compared to $26,850 for men. The study cited the wage eu-agrarpolitik as the primary cause of this inequity.Lower wages and higher expenses mean women also have fewer savings and assets than men. Womens Expenses Exceed Those of Men Men and woman pay the same high prices for food, gas, but women often bear expenses than men, with higher incomes, do not. With 8 in 10 single parent families being headed by women, it is women who have to balance the dual roles of work and parenting - not men. When dead-beat dads fail to pay child support, many women have to pick up the tab by taking on additional, low-wage jobs to try and make ends meet. Nearly every state in the U.S. has now cut funding and programs (also reduced at the federal level) that once helped women enforce their child support awards, trained them to re-enter the workforce, and Congress has even severely cut funding to womens business development centers beginning in 2009. Because of loopholes, changes in child support laws, and fewer affordable legal resources for women, an increasing number of men are defaulting on child support. This means more women are now paying all, or disproportionate amounts, to provide for the needs of their children. Women often pay higher insurance premiums and more out-of-pocket health care costs than men, who do not have to pay for birth control or maternity benefits, and because more women pay for health insurance for their children than do men. Womens credit scores are generally equal to or better than mens, but with lower incomes and smaller assets, to purchase a home women need to go with a subprime mortgage 30% to 40% more often than men, which means a lower down payment, but higher monthly payments. According to Erin Parris h in the Minnesota Press Women often fall victim to risky lending practices, not only because they are more likely to lack financial literacy skills, but also because they are offered subprime mortgages at a higher rate than men. Insecure lending programs are often what push women over the edge, forcing them to choose between feeding their families or paying off debt. SourceErin Parrish. Minnesota Womens Press. MoneyFeature Women are disproportionately vulnerable in todays unstable economy. August 7, 2008.

Boost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness Program

Boost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness ProgramBoost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness ProgramWhen you think about it, the concept of workplace wohlbefinden goes back at least as far as Henry Ford, whose automobile company started five-day, 40-hour workweeks in 1926. Over the decades to follow, companies set policies for breaks and vacations, banned smoking in offices and formed after-work sports leagues.Today, the skys the limit, with on-site fitness boot camps, take-your-dog-to-work days and rooftop yoga sessions.Efforts to promote health and well-being have been shown to increase productivity and help minimize healthcare costs. But they can also do something else give your company an edge when it comes to hiring the best employees before the competition does. Seventy-three percent of workers responding to a new OfficeTeam survey said a companys wellness program influences their decision of whether to work there or not. Given todays tight hiring market, its not surprising t hat workplace wellness is getting more attention in 2019.How can companies, large and small, ensure their corporate health and wellness offerings are attractive to potential hires? Here are six suggestions to get you started.1. Wellness incentivesOffering prizes to employees who engage in healthy behavior, such as weight loss or smoking cessation, can go a long way. Encourage employees to start a lunchtime walking group or consider working with an outside vendor to put a formal program in place, such as lunchtime CrossFit or Weight Watchers.2. Access to fitness facilitiesYour company might have a lunch room, but do you have movement zones, rock-climbing walls and nap rooms? Probably not, but dont worry These are pretty unusual. Consider free or discounted gym memberships, chair massages or exercise classes for your workplace wellness initiatives.3. Ergonomic evaluations and equipmentProper ergonomics is essential in offices and are part of workplace wellness. Can chairs be adjusted for each employees height? Are computer monitors the right height, and are foot rests needed at desks? Standing desks are gaining in popularity, if youre considering cubicle makeovers for your office.4. Healthy food optionsWhat you offer in your break rooms and vending machines says a lot about your workplace wellness. Doughnuts or carrots? Soft drinks or filtered water? You may not want to regulate what your workers eat and drink, but you can encourage good nutrition by offering healthy food choices at company meetings and in office cafeterias.5. On-site vaccinations or health screeningsOn-site flu shot clinics hosted by companies for their workers offer a convenient way to make sure everyone has the opportunity to be vaccinated. Its likely these events will cut back on sick days, too. Companies also can create a culture of wellness with health screenings that might identify risks involving smoking, weight physical activity, blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure and diet.6. Stre ss management resourcesWork-related stress can take a heavy toll on individuals and companies. Some of the techniques to minimize stress you can share with your team include the followingGetting enough restStarting the day with a clear deskKeeping a daily to-do list to prioritize tasksPracticing time managementEating nutritious mealsDeveloping a good support systemEngaging in hobbies you enjoyCommunicating with your supervisor for assistanceOther resources? Music, massages, meditation and walks can do wonders.Just as job seekers are lured by competitive compensation, benefits packages and work-life balance, they are attracted by workplace wellness, too. If you make wellness part of your corporate culture, you may find a bonbon for yourself, too, when its time to hire.
